According to a report in the German tabloid Bild, only 20 percent of the military’s stock of Puma tanks is in working order. As a result, soldiers have been forced to use cars as ersatz tanks, in a scenario that has parallels with a 2014 NATO exercise in Norway, where German troops had to use painted broomsticks as guns. Germany’s Defence Ministry admitted troops were using “other vehicles to practise mounting and dismounting” because of the lack of Puma tanks and was “not satisfied” with the situation
