Punish drivers traveling over 1 mph over the speed limit

Drivers should be punished even if they only exceed the speed limit by 1mph, the policing chief for Britain's roads has reportedly said.

This guy is Chief Constable for West Mercia Police who probably has a Police driver to ferry him about and not have to worry about exceeding a speed limit don’t get me wrong exceeding a speed limit should be punished but where do you draw the line there are some 30 mph roads where traveling at that speed is dangerous. As it stands ACPO guidelines which is 10% plus 2 ie 35 in a 30 seems to work fine you can’t moan about being 5 mph above the speed limit

The 10% plus 2 guide lines are there for a very good reason and that is because the average vehicles speedometer is not manufactured or calibrated to such a degree that 30 mph is 30 mph.

I see his idea more to do with increasing financial revenue for his force via increased speeding fines than anything else.

Agree with the revenue bit unfortunately police do not get the money for want of a better word it goes into a government bank account.I was a traffic officer for 15 years never applied ACPO guide lines could not cope with the paper work if I did that, during the time that kids were coming out or going to school didn’t put pen to paper for less then 11 mph over the limit outside that 15 mph over the limit couldn’t be fairer then that. However drivers that were traveling in excess of the speed limit but below our guidelines were stopped and spoken too

Yes, a very sensible way to and practicable way to deal with a situation. Our traffic sergeant always reminded us that if they were local or travelled the same route daily, that "they would come again ", a second time and it was paper work time.

Agree fully with your skipper many times that did happen and when it did and it transpired the driver had previously been warned then the second time he was in the book can’t be fairer then that

Re: Punish drivers traveling over 1 mph over the speed limit

It made me quite angry listening to all this on the JezVine show today - I, amongst millions of others of course, pay this copper's wages and as far as I'm concerned, he's fired!

After doing a speed awareness course I've been very good and drive pretty much everywhere using either cruise control or speed limiter.

With cruise control set to 70 the speedo shows about 68 and the satnav shows 72 – so which of the three is right? I could be being a total angel and STILL get done!

If this stupid idea was enforced, people without cruise control/a speed limiter – or not using it - would be driving around glued to the speedo instead of the road.

Etc etc etc – all the reasons that there is leeway now.

Having said that – one thing on my awareness course really hit home.
Say you're doing 30 in a 30 zone (which is the MAX speed, not the compulsory speed) – someone jumps out in front of you. You slam the brakes on and stop almost touching them, but you stop, heart racing.

If you were doing 35 mph, then at the point you stopped at 30, you’d still be doing 18 mph.

    35 is 10% PLUS 2 mph.

Many drivers are aware of this unwritten rule and drive to it deliberately – plus maybe a bit for luck.
    That is wrong.
Working for yourself is great, not only can you work half days, you can choose which 12 hours!

Drivers again, always easy money for them Greedy baskets. Though on the other hand if they said 10mph over, someone who did 11 or 12 over would feel hard done by. Cant win really.

Re: Punish drivers traveling over 1 mph over the speed limit

As I said earlier the speed limits are maximum speed limits only, when I lived in London there were many roads that had parking on street both sides effectively reducing to a single carriageway with only room for one car to proceed it could be argued that travelling down these roads at the given speed of 30 was too fast if someone popped out between parked cars you would be pushed to stop in the distance you can see to be clear

Re: Punish drivers traveling over 1 mph over the speed limit

Re my last post my understanding is that these cameras are situated on near side of the motorway out of sight strange that these are being switched on after the chief constable of West Mercia came out this week and advocated the removal of ACPO guidelines with regard to speeding £££££££££
