Formation of the Royal Welsh: The Name Game!!
Having written numerous letters and used some connections of mine for lobbying purposes, I was mortified to find that (a) the real reason for the way in which the Royal Welsh name and the antecendant Regimental names of the RWF and RRW came to be allotted was not as the rationale set out in a letter I have in my posession from a Senoir Civil Servant in the MOD, but because (b) Brigadier Aitken, Colonel RRW, would not support the application to have the Regimental names foremost with the new Regimental Name behind the existing Regimental names as has been granted to the Scottish Regiments. Furthermore, from the article in the final publicatioon of the Ddraig Goch it highlights, he did not have the common decency to inform Colonel RWF of his feelings but contacted CGS directly.
My conclusion to this is:
Firstly, a most ungentlemanly action to undertake.
Secondly, it begs the question, what were his motives? Career prospects or perhaps an innate hatred of the RWF...who knows?
This type of action only personifies our distrust in those who are entrusted to having our Regimental traditions and norms at the forefront of their minds when acting as a figurehead of a Regiment.
Shame must be heaped in bucket loads on a person who should have been man enough to state his reservations and not act in a weasel like manner as it seems in the article.

Re: Formation of the Royal Welsh: The Name Game!!
The way in which the RWF and RRW were amalgamated was wrong from the start. 1) No new cap badge, the RRW one was used in haste 2) Khaki beret! 3) A stable belt which is nothing more than a Dental Corp belt up side down, bought on the cheap, and falls apart
3)The new regimental tie is wrong ( it does not go in a desending blue, red, green when worn)
I believe the amalgamations took place due to the fact that the US Forces could not prononce half of the Regiments and asked Tony Blair to do somthing!

Hello Paul,
Another story I heard doing the rounds is when we were trying to save the regiment. The RRW stated they were only doing their duty ie following E.C.A.B 's orders. I remember this alibi being used once before. I think it was at NUREMBURG does this ring a bell. PRO BONO PUBLICO.

Hingey, i agree with your sentiments about Brig Aitken, remember him when he was a Maj in Lichfield. Always very arrogant & full of his own self importance. It in no way surprised me that he behaved in this manner, he always seemed weasely & snide. Should be ashamed of himself in the way he conducted the consultation, if you call it consultation that is!!!. Eightyseven

Paul
As I said many times before the RWF was truly "Shafted" by the RRW what did they have to loose nothing, as they had already been through an Amalgamation. The RWF I'm afraid took it lying down.

Its the way it was handled that grieves us most, its a big part of many of our lives and it appears only important to us, all our reasons for staying RWF fell on deaf ears, yes I know nothing could or will be done, we have to live with it, but I do hope these w...kers realise what they have done!
