What do you make on the French trying to take over from the UK as deputy leader of NATO citing Brexit

    Re: France NATO

Is France now part of NATO, I know a number of years ago refused to be part of it. But stated that it would support NATO Forces if Europe was threatened

France is now a full member of NATO and the guys I've worked with have been 100% professional. However, as NATO has sod all to do with the EU and our membership - or not - of that organisation, I fail to see why they are trying it on...

wonder if it's anything to do with the fact they just don't like us after all we were at war with them for over a hundred years once that's not counting all the wars in between.Unlike yourself I had no dealings with French troops whilst I was in the army all so it's nice to hear from someone who has,all I can go on is reports that I have read.

Typical French sour grapes because of Brexit. Leaving the EU has nothing to do with our membership of NATO.

    Re: France NATO

Britain could lose the most senior military position it holds in Nato after Brexit, experts have warned amid concern over how the break with Europe could affect the UK’s defence capabilities.
The Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) said the post of Deputy Supreme Allied Commander (DSACEUR) – held by Britain for more than 60 years – could be transferred to an EU member to retain links to the union.
France is reportedly among the countries vying to take the position, which ranks at number two in the alliance’s military command structure, with only the American Supreme Allied Commander above.
An unofficial delegation of French military officials arrived in Washington in September to argue their armed forces were better placed than the UK to lead Nato in Europe after Brexit.

    Re: France NATO

Wasn't it last year or the year before they had to borrow some of our planes to get equipment and troops into Africa some where.

Just a little joke "why are there so many trees in Paris"
"so the French can hide when the Germans come"

Well the French have never thought much of this country at any level. De Gaulle hated us with a vengeance as far back as WW1. WW2 over 70% of the population supported Germany, they refused to immobilised their overseas fleet which resulted in a very short naval engagement. In more recent times this is a fellow NATO member who supplied during the Falklands War, the Argentinian military with munitions, technical information and French technicians.
I think history shows that the French have a poor record in the defence of continental Europe. Plus as others have said on this thread E.U. membership has nothing to do with our membership of NATO, nor the ability of our armed forces.
It's the French causing more mischief, stirring the pot to see what comes to the surface.

A meeting of the French High Command at a secret location in around 1919. " J'ai un plan ruse Baudrier ". Rough translation I have a cunning plan Baldric. Thus the plan for the defence of Paris was formed.

    Re: France NATO

Out of 28 NATO members only five USA,Poland,Estonia,Greece and Uk contribute the minimum 2% GDP.France which wants to take over from UK contributes 1.7% so if it wants to take over from UK someone tell they to pay their share
