    ABERFAN - one further memory

Following on from my previous post it came back to me, while watching a newsfilm report yesterday evening, that I witnessed an RAF helicopter flying in on the Sunday or Monday following the landslip and two men in military dress (the old OG?) being lowered by winch into the street near the PantGlas Junior School. We were told that these two were Aberfan boys who had been brought back from their regiments in Germany because of the losses in their families in the village. Are those soldiers members of this Forum or does anybody know who they are and where they are now?

Thanks for sharing both those memories Keith. Did you see the excellent Huw Edwards docu in the week, that focused on the Official Enquiry that followed? Tasker Watkins VC was one of the barristers for the families.

Yes I did, Al, I watched it twice. Very touching and every time I see shots of those men working inside the school ruins I was so grateful that my contribution was up the mountain diverting water (in the drama documentary Lord Robens actually mentioned that he had witnessed the work being put in divert water away from the site to ensure that no more slurry was washed down by the streams). The programme was impressive and, sadly, served to demonstrate how badly we have been done by our political elite, for so, so long!
