    Hello,
I joined the 1st batt bound for Jamaica from Saighton Camp Chester. I went to B Coy 6 Platoon. Griff 70 was my corporal. I was in the best of Company D J Gee, Sparrow, L/cpl Edge, Cpl Titcombe, Lodwig from Wrexham who was stabbed with an ice pick in Kingston The Duke (Windsor). Georgie Bratcher, The Williams Cpl brothers (Donkey Jaws) their last two were 22 & 33 I think the full Cpl was 33 (Donkey Jaws.)Have a look at my web site it contains some info on the 1st in the West Indies. I was known as "Don" I was provost corporal in Belize with L.Cpl Dai 13 and L/Cpl Wheeler as my subordinates. CSM MacDonald M.M. was in Belize with us. Oscar Slater stayed in Jamaica. Major The Lord Wynnford had left B company and was replaced with Major Tolhurst for our tour of duty in Belize

g'day Don. Many thanks for your promt reply. I went to Grenada with the second small detachment on a piddling little bucket of a boat. We had the vickers mg. with us and cpl Sullivan with the range finder. Can't remember the names of any of the others, other than Johns 57. Cpl sullivan was the bloke who went awol to the russians with "red " mercer, when we were in berlin.turned up at saighton camp in time to catch the Dilwara. Remember the blue nylon pyjamas they issued us with along with our kd kit. a lot of them ended up over the counters of the pubs around chester. They were very marketable. I rejoined the 1st at saighton from the demo platoon at Eton Hall. I also recall that a lot of wall cupboards, bits of furniture and things went into the stoves to warm our huts at saighton. The damages bill caught up with us in Jamaica. "Those were the days". Many thanks again Don and my best wishes from sunny Queensland where my wife Diane and I live on a very very small tropical island .

    Hello Trevor,
I think you have your wires crossed about Saighton. New intakes from Brecon went to Saighton. The Batt were based in the Dale, you were right about burning every thing in sight to keep warm whilst we were in Chester. As I remember it many men were stopped barrack room damages that were billeted in the Dale on our first pay parade in Jamaica.I remember collecting coal from freight trains on the railway line to keep us warm an ongoing job it was bloody freezing in Chester whilst we were there.
    All the best for now.
