Should I Feel guilty

Whenever the the media announce the death of a soldier in Afghanistan my heart skips a beat, firstly for our lads secondly for my grandson who is a member of B Coy. When they name another Reg. I give a sigh of relief. I know this is wrong, but i cant help it. Should i feel guilty.

Not at all mate! I'm sure we all feel the same when we hear the bad news and later hear its not one of our lads. It is only natural to feel an afinity to those you are closer to. I dont have any family serving with the Battalion but I still feel the relief and the sadness whenever a loss is announced. I hope your grandson stays safe.

I agree entirely with what Gwyn says. Its only natural to want your own to be safe. But as Gwyn states: We mourn all those who sadly become victims of conflict and of course we all feel down when any news of our closet relatives, friends or fellow comrades are struck down serving their country.
Best wishes to you and to your grandson for a safe return, and to all those serving in conflict zones throughout the world.

frank let's be honest about it , if you never felt like you did then you should feel guilty . i don't know about the other members but everytime i hear of a casualty i hope it's not a royal welchman first then i feel sorry for whover it is and his family so should i feel guilty?
i think not its a natural reaction as the other guys say ,so now ill stop rambling you stop fretting and hope your grandson and his mates stay safe and come home soon mate

You should not feel guilty in any way, our son has just returned from a tour of Afghanistan and what a big sigh of relieve both Carol (his mother) and myself had when he returned. We both still get upset when hear of deaths/casualties in both Afghanistan and Iraq. So Keep your chin up mate and our thoughts are with you and your family at this time, we know what you are going through at this present time.

No, definutly not! We've all been there and done that. Thats the normal reaction.
We all hope all the lads and lasses are safe but if we're honest none more so than our lads and lasses, especially those related to anyone on this site.
God bless them all and keep them safe.

I feel guilty in a different vain, I have no relatives serving but spent six years in recruiting, and also breath a sigh of relieve when it is not somebody I put into the Army. I put nearly 400 soldiers into various Regiments and Corps the majority being Royal Welch. Upto now thank God only one has passed on. But I think back to my 22 years and know that I have given a lot of people great oppurtunity in life, and as the saying goes there is more risk in crossing the road!

Hi Frank. I've just got back from Afghan, the lads are doing a fantastic Job. I have just came home to do a course, then I should be going back out, however I felt guilty leaving them. I know what it's like because I had a Brother in the Falklands war and two more in 1 RWF so I know what it's like mate. It's just like Mike Carey says there is more risk crossing the road, however it's also nice to know when your away that there is someone thinking about you.
