Mrs Dilys Glover (daughter of late Colonel H.Maldwyn Davies)
I would like to let Forum members know that Mrs Dilys Glover of Mold passed away on 12 January aged 92, of complications arising from a fall suffered last August.
In 2016 she published her father's account of service with 1/5th RWF in the First World War; H.Maldwyn Davies, A Flintshire Territorial At War 1914-18 (Bridge Books, Wrexham). Davies (1889-1950) was from Hawarden, and was commissioned in 5th RWF in 1912. He took part in the Gallipoli and Middle Eastern campaigns, and continued with the battalion after the war, becoming its commanding officer 1933-38 and rising to Brevet Colonel and Deputy Lieutenant for Flintshire as well as receiving the OBE. He also helped raise and command the 70th (RWF) Anti-Tank Regiment RA 1938-40, before interrupting his usual teaching work by being OC Troops aboard the troopship Samaria 1941. Also Director of the British Red Cross (Flintshire), and much involved in fundraising for 5th RWF prisoners of war comforts.
Dilys, despite being aged nearly 90, persevered in creating a book which incorporates not only her father's own account (written 1920) but also letters, elements from his scrapbook, and many unique photos. Before her fall she was also planning to do something similar for his Second World War service.
Her funeral service will be held at Hawarden St.Deiniol's church on Friday 1 February at 10:30am. Her son Richard has kindly agreed to my suggestion that the event be advertised to the wider Regimental family, given her pride in her father and his regiment, and the work he did for PoWs and ex-comrades. Her work has enabled us to access a very good account of the campaigns in which the RWF Territorials were engaged during the Great War.
