We are saddened to report the death of John Skene MBE 1RWF who passed away on the 5th April, aged 99.
John joined the Glosters in Oct 1939. He was deployed to France on Good Friday 1940, as part of a mixed group of reinforcements, and was eventually evacuated via Cherbourg in June 1940. He was then transferred to 1RWF joining them on the East Yorkshire coast in July 1940. He later took part in the battles at Donbaik in March 1943, and at Kohima in April/May 1944 with 1RWF. John was a member of the Intelligence Section during both of those battles.
He was evacuated suffering from dengue fever and malaria. He continued to serve until the end of the war, eventually being discharged from the Army in February 1946 and then transferred to the reserve.
In civilian life he was awarded an MBE for Services to Engineering.
We are not currently aware of any other surviving RWF who fought at Donbaik & Kohima. We send our deepest condolences to his children, family and friends.
