    Colonel TLM Porter OBE

    Info Via RHQ:

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Colonel TLM Porter OBE. Col Porter had suffered ill health for a number of years, and passed away peacefully in France on the 28th May 2017. He had lived in France since retiring from the army. A private family cremation took place in the 2nd June, followed the next day by a celebration of his life held at his village church.

Colonel Porter was formerly the CO of 1RWF, and he commanded the battalion during its tour of the Falklands in 1985 and the emergency NI tour in 1986. Many of us will remember him as the quintessential Commanding Officer, a big man, a gentleman, kind, confident and a leader of men.

With deepest condolences to his widow, family and friends.

I was his Batman in Iserlohn when he was a young 2nd Lt. He was a very good artist as he had many drawings and paintings he had done in his bunk. I was also fortunate to finish my service with him when he was CO in Warminster. A well respected officer . My condolences to his family he will be sadly missed. R.I.P. Sir.

He was Adjutant in Londonderry at the time of Gerard Bristow's murder. I was in his office, along with the Ops Offr (JCWW), typing up an Op Order when the news came through from the Ops Room that Gerard had passed away.

He had a Bassett Hound, the name eludes me, which was my first experience of that wonderful breed. I currently have two of them, probably because of that long ago experience.

The world is a much lesser place for your passing, Colonel. Rest in Peace.

Colonel Porter was one of the finest Officers, that I had the honour to serve under. As a disillusioned Cpl intending to leave the army, he turned me around, to complete my service. Not only a first class officer but also a first class gentleman and human being. Thank you Sir. Rest in Peace.
If I can help somebody as I pass along, my living will not be in vain.

Can only reiterate what Al and Gwyn have stated. A First Class Officer and it was a pleasure to have served under him. A well respected CO by all who knew him.

Big in stature, big in heart and his passing is very sad in deed.

Rest in Peace Sir. My sincere condolences to all the Family.

A great CO and man. Can remember a funny incident when we were in Washington State when I was producing some unofficial "Calling Cards" for the men to use when they had encountered the local ladies. He just smiled and walked away. RIP Sir.
