Major ERL (Roddy AKA Punchy) Jones
I have just learned of the passing of Maj ERL (Roddy) Jones - AKA Punchy.
In as much as I bullied and encouraged him to join our London Branch, he never did but was a staunch supporter of our Branch St David's Day Westminster Cenotaph Wreath Laying, Westminster Abbey Homage, Regimental Plot and occasionally our Xmas Buffet Lunch.
He was highly respected, a fountain of knowledge wasn't in favour of IT & PC - he was a ground level warrior who spent a lot of time in Military Liason in the Middle East - I would equate him to our "Lawrence of Arabia"

Re: Major ERL (Roddy AKA Punchy) Jones
Very sad news indeed.
Remember him well at Springfield Road RUC Station in 75. I think he was Senior Major then. He used to wonder around the location, usually on a Wednesday, and he would say to you, 'what are you doing tonight'. He would then tell you to report to the loading bay just before last light along with three or four other people he had spoken to earlier in the day. He would take us out on patrol and we would go all over the place. Sometimes stopping to lurk... We would be out way into the early hours of the morning.
Cracking Officer, would have followed him anywhere in those days.
Rest in Peace Sir.

Re: Major ERL (Roddy AKA Punchy) Jones
Had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman a few times 12/15 years ago in a professional capacity. I think he retired from The Sultan of Oman's forces but a bad leg in later life could not prevent him from attending some dangerous areas latterly on humanitarian missions. Could not help but admire him. Giant of a spirit, now reunited with wife Gigi. Rest in Peace Sir. The World is poorer for your passing. Thoughts are with family, friends and colleagues.

Re: Major ERL (Roddy AKA Punchy) Jones
My condolences to family and friends.
A great motivator and professional soldier.
On returning to Hong Kong from a climbing expedition in New Zealand I was called to the company office. (Obviously thinking the worse).
I was greeted by the question. "Did you bring photo's"
He was genuinely interested in his men.

Just noticed it was today. A shame it was not notified earlier, clearly a very well respected man.
