Cheers Al, did not spend long at Lemgo, having arrived in November 1981 - knew it was a German Army Camp but not that the SS were there!!

Excellent blog Al, so many great memories of Lemgo. Like you i arrived in Lemgo as a spotty 17yr old albeit in November 1979 (having done ILJB in 1978/1979 and then 2 months as a trained soldier there). I would love to get back there at some point.

Followed your pics on FB Al, very envious. I enjoyed Lemgo a lot, great memories especially of the guys who are no longer with us.
If I can help somebody as I pass along, my living will not be in vain.

    Re: Lemgo - A Return 33yrs On

What a coincidence! Carol and I returned to Lemgo on 8th Sept 2015 and stayed at the Stadt Palais hotel in Papenstrasse for 3 nights. The principal reason was that my son bought us return tickets for us and our car on the ferry from North Shields to Amsterdam after over hearing us talk about our wishes for a nostalgic journey. We had a fantastic time, but what made it even better was that by chance 4 or 5 years ago my brother in law had bought a silver enamelled pocket watch at a boot fair. The watch had an inscription on the back which read "Carl Ploger Detmold" with some photographs of German soldiers from the Second World War . After carrying out some research we contacted a family in Detmold and discovered that the watch belonged to the Grandfather of the person we had made contact with. As a result of this we have had great pleasure in returning the watch to the family!
Also we went back to where Carol worked at Pahna (ginger bread love hearts) with Carol Carnell (Mikes wife) and Julie Lewis (John Lewis's wife).
The rugby pitch is still there and Lemgo even have their own team.
    Oh what brilliant memories!
