Pryce Davies - Died of Wounds 13 Jan 1945 - Family Meets Section Commander
On this day the 11th Jan 1945, alongside the banks of the Irrawaddy River, Burma. Cpl Ted Jones a farmers son from Welshpool won the Military Medal, in an offensive action he led against the Japanese. During the action one of his men, Pryce Howell Davies, a young lad from Newtown was mortally wounded. Sadly he died from his wounds on the 13th January 1945.
When Ted was demobbed at Newtown in 1946, he visited the parents of Pryce and their young family.
Yesterday, seventy years after the incident, Ted met with Pryce's younger brother and sister Selwyn and Rita at the Town Hall in Welshpool. He was able to spend a long time with them, explaining the circumstances of their brothers death, and also crucially the details of Pryce's burial, of which Ted took part. The surviving family had no knowledge of the incident in which Pryce had died.
As you can imagine it was a very emotional meeting, tinged with sadness. Very powerful to us as onlookers. But the family agreed it was a positive experience for Selwyn and Rita, they were clearly touched that they were able to spend time with the man who had fought alongside their brother on that fateful day and ask questions. The group spent some 45mins talking in private, they were clearly all happy to be with each other. Ted was very gratified that he was able to meet them after all these years.
