D Day - The Only RWF Fatality

FUSILIER ARTHUR CHARITY RWF – 6 COMMANDO
KIA D-Day 6^th June 1944

Fusilier Arthur Charity, formerly of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, served in No.4 Troop of No.6 Commando from at least October 1942 and then with the Medical Section of HQ Troop of No.6 Commando from at least 30^th August 1943. They landed on Sword Beach D-Day 6^th June 1944.

Arthur was reported as being killed in action on 6th June 1944, aged 24 years. He was the son of Arthur and Sarah Charity; husband of Joan Charity and father of Keith Charity, of Hove, Sussex, and was laid to rest in La Delivrande War Cemetery (Douvres, Calvados, France). Grave V.C.3.

The inscription on his headstone reads: ‘With tender thoughts and deep regrets. We loved you & never forget. Wife Joan and son Keith.’ Arthur is the only RWF listed casualty for D-Day.

We will remember them.

Looking on the bright side, we Comrades might be eternally grateful that only one Fusilier fell in Normandy on that, the "Longest Day". The carnage was yet to come to the Regiment in that Theatre of War.
