Re: David Jones 1st Bn RWF - India 1898
People on here much more knowledgable than me but weren't the 1st Battalion in England in 1898?

Re: David Jones 1st Bn RWF - India 1898
Bizarrely last night whislt checking Ancestry, I found a pension record for David Jones from Mold who enlisted in 1880 and was discharged in 1892. On first glance the service number was correct….It was only when I re-checked that I realised the number was nearly correct, as Eric Morecambe may have said…."All the right numbers, but not necessarily in the right order"!!
This one was David Jones 2651
1898 = 1st Bn in the UK(They had departed Jhansi Northern India in Oct 1896).
2nd Bn at Crete and Egypt( In Dec 1898 they headed to Hong Kong).

Re-looking at Wilcoxon's images. The discharge date is Jan 1896. This is confirmed by cross checking the CO's signature, that of Lt Col C Norman. That CO departed the Bn in March 1896.

Checking the 1st Bn regimental roll for the 3rd Burma War 1885-1887. No soldier called 2561 Jones listed. So look for his service with the battalion between 1887-1896

Are Regimental Rolls same as Musters?

The info came off the campaign medal roll on Ancestry that shows an entitlement for a particular medal. I think "Muster Rolls" are a general list list of men serving at a particular time.
