RWF Slate Plinth Marker for the Arboretum.

    Hi to all,

Has any one got any up date info on the Marker Stone or Slate, that is to be Put in place at the Arboretum.
on our visit I was told by a Member of the staff that the Slate Plinth stone was at the Arboretum.
But they did not know when it was being put in place. Any information Please.

From one who cares about this.

It was put in place by Pioneers from 1st Bn last month (September). I have seen a photo so if I can get it to my computer will post it later.

Further info from Richard Tuffney RHQ Cardiff.

Much progress has been made on the Memorial front. As 1 R WELSH are due to leave the Dale Barracks shortly to relocate to Tidworth, it was agreed by the Regimental Committee that rather than leaving the present Stone Memorial at the Dale to waste, it would be best served being relocated to the Arboretum to form the centrepiece of the new Memorial.

After much effort and hard work, the stone obelisk was moved in September as part of ‘Phase 1’ of the Project – no mean feat relocating a 10 tonne piece of Welsh stone cemented into the ground! Phases 2, 3 (&4) are still to be officially decided, but the intention is to introduce a Dragon statue (similar to that at Mametz Wood), granite seating to include a short summary of the former regiments history and most noted acts, and to finish by landscaping the garden with appropriate flora and decoration etc. No doubt further suggestion/ideas will be introduced during the development phases which will embellish the garden further.

Much work is still to be done, but huge strides have already been made. Work on the memorial is ongoing and the Regimental Committee meet again in November, so it will be discussed further then. No dates have been discussed for its official dedication yet but it is hoped that an appropriate date will be decided upon shortly

Have picked this up on the web, I assume it the same.

Major General Roddy Porter MBE, Colonel of the Regiment made the presentations. The dedication of a new plaque, attached to the memorial stone near to the entrance to Dale Barracks, also took place during the ceremony and honours the sacrifices which were made by personnel on operations. The inscription on the memorial says: "The cry of battle fills the wind. And the blood of lads mingles with the rain. We will remember them".

"Ni ai'n cofio hwy" is also on the memorial according to staff at the site
