Good dog owner

I always considered myself a good dog owner, until the other day when i decided to check on whether something was safe for my dog to eat. She has always enjoyed a bit of apple so i thought other fruit would be ok, how wrong was I ! As little as five or six grapes or raisins were enough to kill some dogs. Also that onions, garlic and any food prepared with them can cause kidney damage.

There is quite a large list of bad foods (some lethal) that all dog owners should be aware of and I am glad now that I checked. Apologies to those already in the know (granny suck eggs) but it may be informative to those like me who only considered "chocolate" to be bad for your dog. I now know what they mean by "killing your pet with kindness".

Just type in bad food for dogs. A number of sites are available and most agree on what is not suitable dogs. Worth a look for anyone who has a dog. It was suggested to me that "my dog eats what we eat with no ill effects". The trouble is, once the liver and kidneys are affected even at a later stage, the clock cant be turned back. I have a friend who's dog died aged 5 from kidney problems. It ate "family food" and particularly fond of chocolate killed with kindness you might say. I know chocolate is a no-no but some of the other things are an eye opener.

Thanks for starting this topic. I was told by a good friend some 10 years ago that giving a dog a raw egg a couple of times a week was good for their health shiny coat etc.On googling what is bad for your dog I found to my horror that;

I have a Jack russel,he is 15 years old.
some 10 years ago he ate about £15 worth of chocolate.
not even the trots...he is a bit senile now though...

Apparently a one-off indulgence of chocolate is more likely to cause vomiting rather than long term damage as opposed to small amounts on a regular basis which will be digested and more likely to cause damage over a long period.

Tangerines are fine though they should not eat the pips. Most fruit seeds and pits (peach) contain cyanide. My jackie loves apple but i make sure she gets it sliced and no core to chew on with the pips.
