Battalion of Royal Welsh faces axe.

I do hope this does not come about.

A battalion of the Royal Welsh is the most likely to face the axe under the UK Government’s review of the armed forces, WalesOnline has learned.

Confirmation of the decision is not expected until Thursday but it is understood 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh is the most likely to get the chop.

I think the fact that Mike Hooley is commenting as Asst Reg Secretary, suggests its a done deal. Surely if you have too many cavalry regiments, cutting an infantry battalion doesn't change anything??/ Bizarre. Sounds like a policy decision made on the hoof.

This was also full on in the Western Mail this morning. Though I did mention it in a trend a few weeks back.

Lucky I got redundancy to finish in Dec. Though the recruiting system will also be in a mess.

Well if we go back to one Battalion again why was the name changed in the first place, as if there is only one we might as well call it 1st Bn RWF.

Further to your comment John, will Cardiff still be Regimental HQ if the 2nd Bn goes. If it is, will they have the same power as they have now?

I can see your reasoning but personally I do not think they will revert from the present title. And are you not forgetting the 3rd Battalion. It would not surprise me if it ends up the same way as the Glos/D&D/DERR/B &W (The M4 Bn) who are now 1 RIFLES

Re: Battalion of Royal Welsh faces axe.

On a briefing last friday, there will be 22 uits Merging or Disbanding:

    4 x RE, 5 x INF, 2 x RA, 1 x Sigs, 2 x RAC, 1 x RMP, 1 x REME, 1 x AAC, 6 x RLC.

They are hoping that ex regulars leaving will join the TA.

Re: Battalion of Royal Welsh faces axe.

I have done some research into the possible disbandment of reg Bn's and i have found the following:

There are 55 Reg Bn's, and the split for the varioius divisions is as follows:

    Scots Div - 5 Bn's (1 Regt) ... Queens Div - 6 Bn's (3 Regts) ... Kings Div - 5 Bn's (2 Regts) ... Pof W Div - 5 Bn's (2 Regts) ... The Rifles - 5 Bn's ... R Irish - 1 Bn ... Para - 3 Bn's (it is very doubtful if the cuts will affect the Paras due to the current role of 1 Para. In addition there is the 2 Bn's of the Gurkha Regt

Having looked at the above figures, how can the press and Cardiff say that one of the Bn's to be disbanded will be a Royal Welsh Bn when we have only 2 Bn's (3 Mercian Bn's) The other divisions have regiments with 5 or more Bn's, like the Pof W Div.

I believe that the Bn's that should be disbanded should come from fm Scots Div, from Queens div, and the Rifles. We will have to wait until Thu to see what happens, but I hope and pray that we the Royal Welsh will not be affected
