    City Status

I have just heard that 'St Asaph' has been granted cioty status to mark the Queens Diamond Jubilee.

    Well done to St Asaph.

I think it's a bit silly really. It's just a village really. If anywhere should have received City Status it should have been WREXHAM. Don't know why they didn't get it. Braz

    Re: City Status

funny i always understood that St Asaph was a city and had been for a very long time. however looking up wikipedia it appears that it stopped being regarded as a city only at the end of the 20 C so this is just restoring something that it already had.......hmmmmm ???

    Re: City Status

Personal view: I don't think Wrexham people really wanted it, I certainly didn't. Most people have more pressing things on their minds and the costs involved don't really justify it. Wrexham is currently in the doldrums at the moment. Lots of bars selling cheap booze and lots of empty shops, speaks volumes. We have a miserable, windblown multi-million pound shopping centre that has ripped the guts out of a bustling town centre. Hopefully the football will be Wrexhams "Good News" story this year. Good luck to St Asaph.

The most immediate change the people of St Asaph will notice is that their business rate will increase exponentially!

Yeh I'm with Al on this one, not really interested in it becoming a City, there was a small pole carried out & the people voted 2.1 against, but as normal some social climbing Councillor's ignored this & went ahead anyway, no comity is going to award City status to a town that it's own people don't want. Wrexham has changed a lot in the last 10yrs some good some bad, if Wrexham FC pull it out of the bag this season that'll be a boost & add a bit of a feel good factor, as it is I'm sure the council can spend the money they were going to spend celebration dinners, changing all the signs & stationary etc to better use.

    Re: City Status

for those of you who might be interested. after a bit more research i found out the following. as a result of the local government act of 1972. on1st apr 1974 ALL cities lost this status and had to reapply.St Davids was not restored to city status till 1994. if anyone is interested the following link will explain how it works;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_st...United_Kingdom

hi again. in response to richie 264 re the social climbing councilor or the wishes of the people, i believe you are wrong on both counts. i believe the restoration of city status has more to do with llanelwy (st asaph ) having an equal, if not better claim to being the oldest religous site in wales. llanelwy founded in 545 by St Kentergen. St Davids about 550. i found the attached links very informative....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Asaph.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St Davids...

I think Ritchie was referring to Councillors in Wrexham social climbing. As you say, St Asaph was a city, I remember being taught that in school. This has restored the status-quo
