I have just posted on a thread( the forum news letter) and had a notification.

Chow, I feel that your statement is a bit exaggerated; however, in this instance, I agree that there was no need to moderate the threads in that forum. I have now moved the threads to General Discussions.
The Newsletter Forum will remain an archive of the Royal Welchman Newsletter, which members can read.
On the subject of why some forums might require moderator validation before new threads, or posts are displayed, I can tell you that it isn't anything to do with "Big Brother" or not allowing a "Free Voice". Irresponsible people can use unmoderated forums for their own purposes to harass, harangue and otherwise foil a forum’s charter, at least temporarily, by choosing to ignore netiquette. In most cases trolls like this can be ignored and they will eventually move on, but there are situations in which a moderated forum is more productive.
For instance our 'Fallen' Forum is a moderated forum, which is just as well. We have had several posts submitted, which Lofty can verify, that were very malevolent, spiteful and vicious about certain individuals. They were not something we would wish relatives to have seen or read.
So, I make no apologies for making some forums 'moderated forums', which require threads and posts to be moderated.

Re: why.
Bob is quite right in that fact that certain Forums need to be moderated protected
In the case of the 'Fallen' Forum, if the post in question had not been moderated and allowed to be posted straight away, i am pretty sure from most quarters of Forum members, that there would be an utter outrage, demanding who allowed this thread to be posted
The same can be said when you first join the Forum ('big brother comes to mind'), if e-mail and IP address are not screened then anyone can join the Forum and as already happened the Forum was attacked and completely crashed and had to be re-built by Bob
So yes, moderation to protect the Forum and it's members is a good thing

Thanks for the explanation Bob/Dave.
I certainly agree with you on the need of moderation ...
Just surprised at the notification on this particular thread....
