"Q" Goldeneye

Having watched Goldeneye (again) last night, it dawned on me that Q (Desmomd Llewyn) was wearing a blue and maroon tie, i wonder if this was old form of Regimental Tie, as i know he served as an officer in WWII with the Royal Welch Fusiliers (although most of it was as a POW): ?

I met Desmond Llewellyn when the St Vennant Memorial was dedicated and accompanied him on a tour of the battlefield. He was a subaltern with B Coy at Robecq during the final stages of the Battle, he found it difficult to remember the exact location of events but described how when surrounded by the Germans he escaped by swimming across the canal via a sunken barge. He took shelter in the lock-keepers house where he was given a set of overalls to replace his wet clothes. When the Germans eventually burst into the house they wanted to shoot him as a spy and apart from the intervention of the lock-keeper they would have. He counted himself lucky not to have been shot on the spot.

His Company Commander, whose name escapes me (David ?) at the moment, was also captured and eventually incarceration in Colditz as a prolific escapee. With skills as an amateur locksmith he broke into the Commandant's wine cellar replacing the contents of the quality German white wines with urine; I wonder whether it was Peisporter and did the Commandant think it was corked.

Yes he confirmed that he wore the Regimental tie as Q.

I read an article in a news paper that "Q" wore his regimental tie when ever he had the opportunity in the films he made.I believe he was killed in a car crash when he was in his eighties.

you are correct he did in a car accident on 19 Dec 1999, coming back from a book signing event at the age of 85

Another interesting anecdote for you. On a visit to the L.O.F in Llandrindodd Wells some years ago, A former Sgt from the Bridgend Branch.("Bill Coakley") who served in the 1st Battalion RWF, during the evacuation of Dunkirk told me the following. He had a short leave from France to get married, which he did. On returning to duty he was captured and spent the rest of the war as a P.O.W. in Germany. After the war he applied for his medals and did not receive the Defence Medal. On querying this he was told he had not spent the required 3 months in defence of the home country (UK). And because he had been a P.O,W. he did not qualify for the Defence medal.Over to the medal specialist members of the forum.
