I have been asked by Al to describe the new Anti Tank system which is now in use within the Bn.

The new Javelin weapon system has taken over the out dated Milan Wpn System and is heavier. The Javelin weapon system has been brought of the shelf from the yanks, however our system has been modified in several aspects and is a lot better then their version thus they now want ours.

The old Milan system use to be wire guided i.e had to guide and track the missile all the way until impact. The Javelin system is fire and forget, we can engage a tgt then either reload and engage a different tgt straight away, or fire and then move to a different position.

The Javelin has got two forms of attack which can be selected by the gunner "firer" Direct attack - like Milan or Top attack which does as it states, it fires directly up in the air and hits the tgt from above straight through the centre of the turret. The round when fired will automaticaly follow the tgt and will destroy any armoured veh in the world no matter what protective armour it has on.

The Thermal sight the Javelin contains is the best night viewing aid available to the British army, a hundred times better than the TOGS system on the Challenger 2 battle tank. The rounds cost £67.000 each and 1 CLU "Command Launch unit i.e Javelin" costs £207.000 each.

The Milan system was geared around defence, the Javelin is completely different, it can be used in the defence however the system is geared around offensive operations. Due to security reasons i cannot really go into the system in great detail however i have got great video clips, if you want them sent to you then just ask and i will email them to you.

The Javelin system if used and deployed correctly is one hell of a good asset within the Battle group and Bn.

My last job was to buy the system for the British Army. The US system has been out there since late 80s so we had to upgrade everything significantly, most especially the optics. 74 is bang on - there is nothing out there better than this.

Lots of good US websites with pics but the facts are on the link below (US only). The UK performance spec is not widely known outside serving circles and it's best to keep it that way.

The Battalion has not used the system in operations yet, how ever the Parachute regiment fired over 270 Javelin rounds in Afghanistan. My mate who serves with them has told me some stories about what happened out there. The Javelin Weapon system, i tell you is unbelievable. The boys were taking out mortar teams, machine gun posts and they even locked onto a sniper that was escaping on a bike they locked onto his body heat and took him out. "UNBELIEVABLE BUT TRUE".
