    Re: Medals on Ebay

It has been mentioned before on this forum the sadness, to see Comrades Medals coming up for sale. As a reminder the resting place for such Medals, if the Recipient/Family/Friends have no further need, should be the Medal Room at the Regimental Museum. All medals are entered in a Medal register when handed to the Museum. Medals will be cleaned and re-ribbon, mounted in a display cabinet in the Medal Room with the name of recipient for all to see. Family/Friends and visitors to the Museum, needing to view the Medals need only enquire at reception, the location of the Medals at the Medal Room can be given.

    Re: Medals on Ebay

The sad thing about some of the medals on sale here is that the original recipients are more than likely no longer with us. Which means a family member has decided that a few quid is more important than legacy. Quite sad. I would back a ban on the sale of campaign medals full stop.

    Re: Medals on Ebay

Jase, with all due respect, a ban on the sale of gallantry or campaign medals would probably achieve just the opposite of your aim. Say you have the medals of a WWI DCM/MM winner and fall on hard times. Today you could sell that group for a good sum to someone who is dedicated to keep the recipients memory alive. Put in the ban, and the option to raise money is for the silver value in the melting pot.

Not a fantasy, it has happened before when times where harder. Make that legislation now and you will make these historic items even scarcer in the future, as I see it quite unneccessary. It would also be a grave violation of property rights. Today the sale of your hard earned medals are outlawed, tomorrow what else.

I do respect the wiew that war medals should not be sold off without some afterthought, but is the general opinion really that medal collectors should be outruled? If so, would be good to know what the consensus is. As to museums, of course they will display the best items, but most often the WWI BWM/Vic will not be displayed and the chance of holding it again in the family is lost forever.

    ATB,
    Lars

    Re: Medals on Ebay

    Dear Lars,
I support your comments relating to Medal Collectors. Regarding Museums, “The Royal Welch Fusiliers” Museum at Caernarfon Castle, will display all medals if the recipient had served in the Regiment, the Museum would be the custodian of the Medals, the family of the recipient could at any time request the Medals to be returned to the family.

    Glyn,
thank's for letting me know about the museum's policy. It is a policy which has my full support and will certainly be a factor when I have to decide what to do with my RWF collection in the future. After all, one is only a temporary custodian with the aim to uphold the memory of services rendered in the best possible way.

    Re: Medals on Ebay

I fully concur with Lars on this subject as I to am a collector of Welsh Regiment campaign medals (RWF, SWB and Welsh Reg), I display and frame all medals I acquire and in doing so I hope I am remembering the sacrifice these brave men gave for future generations.

I only wish Lofty would stop listing all these medals as I’m bidding on most of them LOL

    Re: Medals on Ebay

The only thing I don't agree with Kev on is to stop the heads up coming from Lofty, but I saw the tongue in cheek. Some items might be of interest to some on here, some not. There are those who prefer complete groups, some are OK with broken ones. And some make exceptions in both directions. Please all, keep'em coming, especially the group to Lars Larson with WWI service. (I kid you not, it should be in existence). THe more items being advertised here, the greater the chance of a soldier remembered among those whom it matters most to, I think.

    Lars
