Newbie - Ex Penmaenmawr and R Signals

    Hello to all

I've just found the site ( well done to those who thought this up and got it going ).

Although I am not exactly ex-RWF I was a member of 6/7th Bn (Caernafon and Anglesey) Army Cadets based at Penmaenmawr in the 60's. It must have had a good effect on me as I then went on to do 22 years in Royal Signals, so I hope you don't mind a 'bleep' joining you for a chat now and again.

I did have the pleasure of meeting up with some SNCO's from the 1st Bn on an EPC(A) course in Lisburn around '85 I think and I know that 'fingers' Carlisle was also out there at the same time - his uncle Jeff (Welsh Guards) and I are good mates. I also know that his brother in law was in the Bn and we had a pint or three together in the Bron in Pen about 6 or 7 years ago (really sorry if you're reading this but for the life of me I can't remember your name - pm me as I'd like to get in touch again).

My Taid was with RWF during WW1 and I know that he was shot through the knee during (if family history is correct) the attack at Mametz Wood which probably save his life. He was returned to the UK for convalescence and then went back out and was injured by shellfire though I'm not sure where he was at the time. After recovering, he was posted to Penmaenmawr POW camp as (again, if family history is correct) a 2nd Lt - though I can find no evidence that he was commissioned.

Following the war he remained in Pen but died of TB at the age of 48, brought on by the shrapnel still in his body.

Well there you go, a potted history from an old git.

All the best to you all.

    Tony (Taff) Carr

    Welcome to the forum Tony.

By chance, did you serve in Hereford or Tidowrth in early 70's. I knew a couple of R Signals Seniors, one being a Rear Link Sgt with us (Martin Corcorran).

I personnaly know a guy by name of Dave Barnett (now working in MOD and was on Tarmigan).

    Hi Ball

I was based in Krefeld in the early 70's then Hounslow then back to Germany for the next 6 years.

I can't say that Dave Barnett's name rings any bells but was Martin Corcoran a shooter? I did a lot of competition shooting in the 80's and I'm pretty sure that a Corcoran won the Queens's Medal at RASAAM either late 70's or early 80's.

    All the best

Corky did indeed win the Queens Medal at Bisley, was trying to find out when that was.

If its any help Roger, my first year at Bisley was 1981 and Corky had already won the medal. Memory is fading but I think it might have been 2 or 3 years earlier.

The old man had the Bron from 93 - 96 after finishing on the LSL. I met my wife whilst they had the pub and I have settled in Pen (serving unaccompanied).

Chris 23 (referred to in T Carr thread now lives in LLanfair and works abroad) is well and I think fingers Carlisle (23 former brother in law) has settled in the Tern Hill area. I believe his uncle, Jeff now lives in NI. (Jeff worked with the old man in the careers office in Rhyl in the mid 80's).

T Carr, your thread shows what a small world we live in and the connection the Royal Welch Fusiliers can have on peoples everyday life.

    Vic

Thanks for the info and Chris 23's name, it was difinitely him I was thinking of. I met him in the Bron after the both of us had left the Army, if you're in touch please pass on my regards. By the time your Dad had the pub I'd done my 22 and settled in Oxfordshire but I do remember him.

Tom - I joined the Army Cadets in Pen in 1967, were you still there then? (Only reason I remember the year was that my number was 67120 - what a sad git I am remembering that!).

    All the best
