Fus R Henley NI late 60's/early70's?

I have the General Service Medal for Northern Ireland to Fusilier R Henley,
24143***. The number indicates enlistment sometime 1967-1969.

I wonder of anyone would know or have any recollections of him; or knowing when he served in NI?

I am sure there was a Fus Henley with me in 3 Pl A Coy 1 RWF in Belfast and Tidworth 1976-1977 i am not sure if he left the Army around then because i have no memory of him in Lemgo Germany 1978.

I'm fairly certain that Fus Henley joined up around the same time as me, April 1968, and was with me in training in Borneo Platoon at the Welsh Depot over the summer of that year. I can even see him (if indeed it is him?)- in my 'minds eye' - fairly tall, slim with blonde hair always flopping down over his face, but probably wouldn't recognise him now. With his number being 24143*** the same as my own, he has to have enlisted round that time. Too long ago to be able to remember what happened to him though, sorry.

Bob Henley was in my platoon (1pl A coy) when I joined 1RWF in Dec 1970. We were stationed in Erskine Camp, Hong Kong at the time. I was posted to B Coy in 1971 but know that in Feb 1972 he went to Ebrington Bks, Londonderry with the Bn and, according to the Dec 1972 edition of Y Ddraig Goch he left 1pl as a LCpl towards the end of 1972. I remember him as a good soldier, certainly one you would want with you in war, but perhaps a bit 'wild' in barracks. He gets a special mention in the Journal quote ''...we have said goodbye to many among whom LCpl Henley deserves a mention''. According to the journal there was a Fus Henley 21 in A Coy in 1976 but not sure it was Bob Henley.

By coincidence I bumped into Bob on Birmingham New Street station in the late 70s recognizing him easily by that flop of hair over his forehead refered to by 89's message. Small world eh.

Well isn't that amazing. What is it that makes us remember one particular thing about a person from over 30 years ago?

Bob, thanks for sharing your memories. I find that with a medal, knowing . something about the man who earned it adds so much to the interest. If the 21 number you mention about Henley in 1976 is the last digits in his service number it is not the same. I have chosen not to post the last three digit, by some reason I don't feel comfortable - should anyone want to know just PM. The medal is not court mounted, so perhaps he did not stay in very long after the award?

Should anyone bump into him again, feel free to tell him that the medal is still in existence and also where it is.

Keith, I know what you mean about remembering people from 30+ years ago. Some of my shipmates and fellow recruits in 1976 stands out vividly from other. An experience shared here, a joke there, and at the same time living very close together 7/24 is not easily forgotten.

Lars, I think Lcpl Bob Henley is your man. His number is so close to Keith's it has to be. The Henley 21 of 1976, mentioned by Mike is a probably a different guy.

Mike can you recall at what era your guy would have joined at...would it have been as far back as 1968? or was he from the early 70's.

Hello Al, all i remember about him was that he had been in a couple of years before i got there, he was a quiet bloke who kept to himself and he had the same problem as an ex WO2 who's brothers name is Sid.
