    Silver Jubilee Medal (1977)

Whilst recently seconded to Oxford I got embroiled into a discussion with a cuople of collegues one of which, for want of a (better word), was Ex Airbourne. Not to bore everyone of the "ins and outs" it transpired that the aforementioned individual claimed to be the recipient of variouis medals one of which being the above madal. When I stated that the Jubilee Medal was somewhat contentious at the time of issue he stated that it was now official that anyone who was serving at the time was in fact entitled to wear this medal. To which I vermantly disagreed.
It is, and certainly was my oppinion, that there were only so many medals issued to each Regiment and it was the Commanding Officers decision who was awarded this medal, and that was it! (People that come to mind were Den Braham, Carl Rowlands, CSM Brian Cooper, Bandmaster Hughes and probably the C.O himself).
Can anyone confirm one way or the other if I am right in what I have stated. It would give me the greatest pleasure to contact the above individual over this issue.

Yes you are right, the medal was issued to only 30,000 service men and women from the UK armed forces, and a further 30,000 to Canadian forces. The medal is worth about £180 as opposed to the Golden Jubilee medal which can be now found for as little as £40.

    Kev,

Many thanks for this. Your knowledge of this medal only confirms and strengthens my initial thoughts.

I agree, the medal was only issued to certain people, selected at random from within units. I was serv ing with the TA, and it was the COs choice that no Regulars got the medal and all were to be given to the TA soldiers. The CO was over-ruled, and he was presented with a medal.

    Hello,
As a matter of interest his medals were "run of the mill", GSM NI, UN Cyprus, etc. I just happend to pick up on this issue. I think you are right on M.A. Loloyd and Dixy Dean (A Coy if I remember) on receiving the medal. Thanks for bringing two guys,
(whom I served and drank with) back into my memory. Finally a further thanks for the info on the Morgan Matthew's film.

    Re: Silver Jubilee Medal (1977)

If my memory serves me right I think that there were 5 or 6 of the silver jubilee medals issued to each battalion whereas the more recently issued golden jubilee medal was a far wider issue.

    Hello Dusty,

Ithink you are probably right with the number of medals issued based on nthe recipients below as I belive there could not have been many (if any) more issued in 1RWF.

I could never understand the reason behind issuing meals for Jubilees, a few crates of beer per company would be far more suitable leaving no one out and preventing the " I was awarded this at the battle jubilee" scenarios ever coming about in civi company that is, my opinion only! but again I never got issued the medal so I am basis of course lol
