Am I awkward too? Cos my car has the pump thing on the right inside my Austin Mini 1991 (its a patriotic thing) but the tank is on the left side of the car. Maybe its only British makes that don't go along with this logical theory.

OK - just nipped out to look at the fuel gauge - the fuel pump symbol above it has the handle on the right and so has the one that lights up when I turn the ignition on and only comes back on whilst driving, with a 'ping' noise to indicate low fuel.

My car is American (Dodge) and as the initial post called fuel 'gas' I'm guessing the email originated from the states.

We also have a Volvo - filler cap on left, fuel gauge symbol handle on right. I reckon most cars' gauge symbols have the handle on the right and most cars have their filler caps on the right.

Conclusion - cobblers! It may or may not be the case - just take note of where the filler cap is, and if you forget, big deal, the pump hose will reach over, unless you are female and have parked too far away from the pump.

    TAKE COVER!!!

I got an old H Reg Rover 25 and I am lucky, I can pull a lever by seat and the petrol flap opens, I can then see which side I need to go at a petrol station.

You must be one of the lucky ones I drive a 06 Plate Volvo and when I pull up at a petrol station I have to get out my caf after I stopped it and pull the reay diesel cap cover open. So much for mordern cars hey.
