    A very moving poem

A friend of mine from Caergybi.com wrote this and kindly allowed me to share it with you all.
    Enjoy.

    Soldier

You were there in the carnage of Cressy
    And the horror of Agincourt
    Again in north African deserts
Then the mud of Europe’s floor.
    You faced the terrible spears,
The arrows that fell like rain,
It is your blood that keeps falling
To this day, again and again.
    Yet,
    While wretched wives wail
    And bereaved mothers mourn,
    The men in suits smile
    As another soldier is born.

You are counted and put in a sequence
Of names neatly numbered in lines.
Your body is put out to tender
No match for the bullets and mines.
You are missed so much, after going,
By those whose hearts hold you dear
But the pomp, grandeur and splendour
Of parades, bring home little cheer.
    But,
    While wretched wives wail
    And bereaved mothers mourn,
    The men in suits smile
    As another soldier is born.

You and your brother keep fighting
But it’s not for fear or from hate
The orders keep coming to guide you
    Will the deception never abate?
While you face each other with weapons
That bring terror, maiming and death,
    Others count quickly the proceeds
Each time you breathe your last breath.
    For,
    While wretched wives wail
    And bereaved mothers mourn,
    The men in suits smile
    As another soldier is born.

On the day, yet to come, when all soldiers
    Black, white, yellow or brown,
Join forces to defend one another
And forever their weapons put down,
There’ll be joy in ordinary households
There’ll be singing in Heaven above
The people will all come together
Bringing brand new anthems of love.
    As,
    No more do wives wail
    And mothers don’t mourn,
But the men in suits fear
    Each new soldier that’s born.

    Re: A very moving poem

Very Good Sharon. I think the most poignant part is the reference to the "men in suits". It's these very people who are flag waving supporters of our troops when they embark on any Operation, but the same people who turn their back when support is needed once the job is done, or help is needed.

    - rant over!!
