Update-a Long Long War. Voices From The British Army In Northern Ireland 1969-98

An ex soldier Ken Wharton is compiling a book, about the soldiers experiences in Northern Ireland from 1968 till the end of the troubles. This will be a benchmark book, and it is your chance to make a contribution.

Ken is being fully supported by the Northern Ireland Veterans Association, indeed this weekend he is traveling to Brecon to interview a few RRW boys.

I have spoken to Ken today, the book is making good progress, it will be laid out in yearly chapters, and he has promised me that he will include any RWF contributions, but time is running out. I have already seen one years draft chapter....its extremely well done.

We know from the moving contributions to the Fallen, that our members have their story to tell. This is your chance. Just write the piece on an email and send it too him. His website is: http://www.forgotten-voices.co.uk/

He is especially interested in years 84/85 95/96. But will of course accept other years.....Don't delay.

Re: Forgotten Voices - Northern Ireland

    UPDATE:

Contributions for - Volume I - will close on the last day of October 2007. The book will appear on the shelves in May 2008 with an official launch in London - the Scottish Launch will be in Edinburgh and the Welsh launch, at Brecon.

You still have a short space of time to make your contribution. If you do, it will appear in the book. You obviously have the option to remain annonymous.

UPDATE from the compiler Ken Wharton

The title has been decided as "A Long, Long War: Soldiers' Voices from Northern Ireland, 1969-98" (web page of www.forgotten-voices.co.uk is still live)

The book is being published by Helion and will be in the shops on April 2 or 9. We are hoping for a National launch at the NAM, Chelsea and the Royal Scots Club in Edinburgh and RRW Museum in Brecon have kindly allowed us to have regional launches there in April. The Leeds Royal Armouries have kindly invited us to have a book-signing day there on June 14.

All contributors are welcome to attend as my guests and I will keep you all updated.

This e-mail is also to thank you (300 of you) for contributing to the book with your NI experiences. I am profoundly grateful to you all, for your time and experiences.

Volume 2 is now underway, and I will send out to you all a link for the webpage when it is live.

This link offers more detail about the book. Pre-ordered books will receive a 10% discount. Having be allowed a read of one of the chapters, it will appeal to most of us who served over there. It is set out in year order, from 69 onwards, soldiers experiences, both good, very bad and really humorous. I'm assuming that there will be some RWF anecdotes.

This is a book that needed to be written, its our story.
