Afghanistan CO's Update 2
I am sure that the jungle drums have been beating overtime and that the news has reached most parts of Wales. We have had 2 people injured in an ambush in Kandahar town a couple of nights ago. Even though the names have been made public, I do not wish to publish them here on a relatively 'open' website. RHQs and the Regimental system are able to provide names should they be required.
The two injured were in the first vehicle of a 9 vehicle patrol when they received incoming small arms fire and were showered by shrapnel from an RPG. Even though they were both injured, they drove through the ambush and lead the rest of the patrol out of danger and the patrol returned a considerable amount of firepower in the process. They extracted to a Canadian patrol base and were taken by helicopter to hospital, where they had operations on their forearms / hands. The injuries are not too severe and when I've visited them in hospital over the past 2 days, they have been sitting up and in good spirits. The patrol, continued to its destination the following night.
They are now on their way to Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham. The official and Regimental 'systems' both kicked in very quickly and matters in the UK and Cyprus were, and continue to be, dealt with smoothly. The Welfare Office in Cyprus and RHQ are now dealing with all related matters.
This is only a brief synopsis, and whilst I would obviously prefer not to have any casualties, all members of the patrol, particularly the two who were injured, showed remarkable courage, foresight and determination to fight their way out of a well laid ambush. Their skills and drills instinctively kicked-in and they performed well.
