When I did my National Service during the severe winter of 46-47 we were at Catterick in "Spiders"_ a circle of barrack huts surroundingthe ablutions-showersetc. in the center. These were frozen solid with burst pipes. There were some boffinsfrom the Signal corp who managed to heat water for shavingby connectinga lead to a light fittingand ataching it to a piece of wood floatingin a bowl of water. There were a few blown fuses but nothing serious1 I never figuered out how it worked, can anyone out there explain? Hampy.
