Good Afternoon.

As some of you may be aware the large Royal Welch Fusiliers Archive has recently completed its move from Caernarvon to Kingsmill in Wrexham.

It is now located over 3 floors of an old water mill, which are now full of archived notes, diaries, published works, maps, uniforms etc.

The archivist there, Brian Owen, supported by Lt General Jonathon Riley, is looking for 10 to 12 volunteers, for assistance with research for enquiries, (family history mainly), transcription of diaries and letters and digitization of photos and documents. There are an estimated 1000 enquiries per year to be returned after the appropriate fee is received.

These are the main areas at present – others will no doubt arise.

We can’t pay a wage but we are happy to meet expenses.

The work may suit ex- members of the Regiment but could equally be of interest to anyone keen on social history and/or archives.

If you have a few hours a week, are within travelling distance please send me an E mail (militaryresearch@hotmail.co.uk) for more details – or my telephone number is: 01948 780 688.

This sort of opportunity does not come along very often and unlimited access to these archives is an exciting prospect.

Regards,

Simon

An exciting prospect indeed, Simon, and if I lived near Wrexham I'd be knocking on your door right now. Unfortunately I don't.

One correction, if I may. Brian Owen is the Curator of the RWF Museum. The Museum Archivist is Anne Pedley.

Is Anne Pedley any relation to Nick Pedley?

Hello John,

I understand your point, but when I met with Brian Owen last thursday he told me that he would be spending 4 days a week at Wrexham and one day per week in the Museum.

Best Wishes,

Simon

I'm sorry to say that I have no idea, Rog! All I know is that she has a Dutch ancestor. Does that help?

That is because Wrexham is more or less on the other side of the world from where Ann lives, so she will go there only rarely. Brian will be doubling as Archivist, locum tenens so to speak, but he is still the Curator. And to make my listing complete: Gill Owen is the Documents Officer.

Hello John,

Point understood. What ever the final set up the sooner it settles down the better as there is a backlog of enquiries to answer. It will take a fair amount of work but once done the project shows considerable promise - so the more people we can get involved the better.

I quite agree, Simon. Brian has been struggling with this move for about eight or nine months now, and there is a lot of work to do getting through the backlog of enquiries. Volunteers, one step forward please!
