The Memoirs of Field Marshal Montgomery

    ISBN-10: 1844153304

This is an outstanding book. Easily read and understood at all levels. Im about quarter of the way through, and my initial thoughts are that Montgomery was an extremely driven individual, who devoted his life to the science of warfighting.

He was ruthless when dealing with poor commanders, but equally he was compassionate to his men especially amongst the lower ranks. His views on maintaining morale are enlightening. He specifically mentions minimising battle casualties and also highlights care of the wounded, as being a major factor in maintaining wartime morale!!.

Bearing in mind he had fought as a young officer in the battlefields of France during the Great War and had witnessed the worthless carnage. It clearly had a major effect on his outlook and shaped his style of command.

This is a seriously good read. He pulls no punches.

    Thanks Glyn

His book is refreshingly honest. He pulls no punches about some of his other commanders. One possible character flaw is he has yet to admit any mistakes(perhaps he never made any!!).

It is interesting that he talks in detail about operational planning. He wrote himself the operational orders that his Corp Comds received. He called them his masterplan and would not let his staff do it. He allowed subordinate commanders freedom of action within parameters that he set, however they were never allowed to deviate from his battle aim.

He kept a tight control of his units at all levels. He even selected his battalion/unit commanders. If he felt they were weak....history. He is also bold when dealing with poilticians. He selected a waxing moonlight nght to launch one battle, Churchill wanted the date brought forward. Monty refused and told him to find another commander. Monty got his way.

I may read Allenbrookes diaries next to get some perspective.
