    Military games 1946 Berlin

Hi, I would be grateful if anyone has any information regarding the Military Games of Berlin 1946.

Whilst digging in my garden (,which was my fathers property before,) I unearthed a silver medal which I believe was issued at the Military Games in Berlin in 1946. My father served in the RWF at this time and I am intrigued as to wether he took part in this event as he never mentioned it. I know he was a weapons instructor and also played in goal for the regimental hockey team. His name was,

Seargent Walter Archiebald Davies (sniper) from Llandyrnog, Nr Denbigh in North wales.

Thanks in advance for any information

The event took place in Sept 1946, at about that time the 1st Bn was based at Gevelsberg conducting internal security operations. They also had responsibility for two Displaced Persons Camps, one for the Polish and another for Yugoslavs, apparently a very difficult task. There is no mention of the sporting event in Regimental Records. I will keep a look out for mentions elsewhere.

I have emailed the International Military Sports Council (CISM) to ask if they have records of the participants and medal winners at the Games in 1946. I will let you know if I get a reply

    Dear Sir,

I checked in our archives but I couldn’t find anything related to this event. Actually our organization was created in 1948 so we didn’t organize those games.

I remain at your disposal for any other question you may have.

    Best regards,

    David Vandenplas

I have also came across this film footage

The armies of occupation in Germany organise an "Olympic Games" (ie Inter-Service Games) in Berlin, Germany.

Various shots crowds filling sports stadium. General MacNarney of US army arrives at the stadium, followed by officers of other Allied forces. Various shots teams marching onto field, including Belgium, England, Denmark and France.

Various shots as runner lights the Olympic-style torch to start the international athletics competition. Shots of 200 metres race won by Klein of Holland. Various shots of discus and hammer events. Shots of 400 metres relay race won by the US Army. Various shots 1500 metres won by Nankerville of Britain. Various shots of winning athletes on rostrum.

Date given on old record is 17/09/1946.

You will probably find this thread interesting.

"I recently came across a bronze medallion 2" diameter. On one side it has the red & black formation sign in enamel and the words BRITISH TROOPS IN BERLIN, on the other side it has an embossed/stamped picture of what appears to be the olympic stadium. There is no date or other marks. I would like to hear from anyone who knows how old it is and whether it was struck for any special event or award. I haven't been able to find anything about it at all so I'd welcome any information."
