On 6 June 2014 there is to be a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the D Day landings in Normandy that will be attended by Her Majesty the Queen.

The RWF Comrades Association will not OFFICIALLY attend the ceremonies of the 6th, but will instead commemorate the Regiment’s involvement in the Normandy Campaign by holding an act of commemoration at the RWF Evrecy Memorial on 17 July 2014. This date has been chosen as the nearest to the actual anniversary of the battle at Evrecy that can be coordinated with the Marie.

The plan is for a small group to travel on 16 July 14 in small coach/mini bus via Portsmouth and taking the evening ferry to Caen (Quistrum). Onward travel to Evrecy on the morning of 17 July 14, attendance at ceremonies in Gavrus and Evrecy, retuning on the evening Ferry to Portsmouth on 17 July 14 then homewards on the morning of 18 July 14.

The accommodation plan is for onboard cabins on the ferry for the journey out and return. This may have to be varied subject to availability.

At this stage we are particularly keen to identify Regimental veterans of the battle who are fit and able to travel with the party. Their full expenses will be met including a carer should they wish. Other members of the party will be representative number of standard bearers and officials.

Branches are requested:

  • To identify veterans who are able to travel and indicate whether they will need to be accompanied by a carer.
  • Indicate if they can provide a standard bearer (not necessarily the official branch standard bearer).
  • Respond by telephone to Judy at RHQ at the earliest opportunity.

The commemoration party will be selected from the returns provided.

The Officers Association are asked to provide representation and indicate whether they wish to travel with the party or independently.
