    Hi Paul,

the 2nd Bn RWF were in India from 1902 until 1914. Some of this period is covered in Frank Richard's book OLD SOLDIER SAHIB. And then in the immediate post war period the 1st Bn RWF went to India and took part in the actions in Waziristan for which the clasp was awarded.

    Thank you Jerry

I've recently taken up collecting medals particularly those from the Royal Welsh (Welch) Fusiliers and found this medal for sale in an auction house. Before I decide whether to buy it I just wanted to find out as much as can to ensure its genuine

    Hi Paul,

I have a few medals to the RWF and some of the other Welsh regiments from WWI. If you have his service number you should be able to research him to see if he served during the Great war prior to his service in India. The history that can sometimes be found from a named medal can be very rewarding and really adds to them.

Does the number end with 3648 or 3862? If so the medal and clasp is confirmed on a Medal Index Card.

    PS

This site is useful to see which medals were earned by the RWF: http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/bri..._fusiliers.htm
The book "that astonishing infantry" is a good addition to the bookshelf to have some more detail on the service of the regiment.

    Paul

I started acting as a caretaker for medals to the Regiment in around 1990. Two things :

    1) If you have any queries about anything medal related I will always be happy to help you
    2) It is a road to lifelong poverty

    Re: post WWI Service

Thanks for all your help with this guys. You're right it can be expensive, I've been looking at the Victorian and earlier medals and they can run into the thousands, bit rich for me at this time.

The medal I originally posted about has this information on it. It would be interesting to see what service he saw prior to India

    4183648 Pte. F. Evans, R. W. Fus

    Again thanks guys

    Re: post WWI Service

It was one of the MIC's I found, but unfortunately it had no other information except the service number and entitlement to medal and clasp. I would not think he saw any service in WWI, at least not active service abroad. Perhaps Richard or someone else has an idea about the date he entered from his service number?

    Lars

I can't nail an enlistment date to him - but his Christian name was Francis.
