"Fighting with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers"

Hello All,
I have just received my copy of a new book on the history of the R.W.F. It Is titled " Fighting with the Royal Welsh" Sub titled " Men of the Midlands in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers 1900- 1919" and covers the history of the Regiment over the period shown. Written by Graham Knight It is a card cover and contains 216 pages.This book harks back to a much read thread on the forum some time ago. The thread was "The Birmingham Fusiliers" the new book was renamed after some deep thought by the author.Of course technically that was the title of the R.W.F. from the end of the 2nd Boer War until circa 1924. Then of course came the merger on "Dai's Day 2006, which reverted to the old spelling within the new formation. Graham Knight's father won the M.M. in the Red Dragon mine blast which affected the 2nd. The book contains a lot of old news paper photos of men serving in the R.W.F. for many years even in the "China War" these photos are not perfect but have been brought back for regimental historians to refer to. Graham has worked hard researching the Micro Fiche of news papers from the Midlands for quite a while This book is a credit to our Regiment as was the reprints of O.S. N.D and O.S.S by Frank Richards D.C.M M.M. Plus of course the books of "Duty Done" by David Langley who wrote the foreword for Graham. I can highly recommend these books as a valuable addition to our glorious history to all Regimental historians. I can pass any queries on to Graham if any one is interested in purchasing a copy.

I too have now been able to take a good look at my long awaited copy. As RBD has already stated, the Birmingham born and bred author's father was decorated for his bravery serving with 2/RWF. It is no surprise therefore that graham has an interest in both the regiment and the City of Birmingham.


A person could be forgiven for thinking that a book about just one Location's contribution to the armed forces might not appeal, and focused on just one Regiment in that one location even less. You would be wrong in this case.


This book is more than that. Reading through this superbly illustrated and painstakingly researched work it is clear that this is more than just a list of names. Not only have the local newspapers been combed but Information has been supplied directly from the families of men who served, and as such would never have been known to the general researcher. There are great group photos, maps and absent voters lists to support the text.


It is a great insight into the social history of the area and the rise of "the Birmingham Fusiliers" I would urge anyone with even the slightest passing interest in the RWF to get a copy. Graham must be congratulated for ensuring that the names and service of these men of the midlands will now live forever in posterity.
