Fusiliers:Eight Years With The Redcoats In America

    From The Mail On Sunday.
The above book by Mark Urban may be of interest to forum members, I have read the review and it certainly look's interesting.
According to the review it it put's the American War of Independance in a different light, to quote the reviewer Bernard Cornwell " Mark Urbans superp book, Fusiliers, throws a strong sideways light on what it was like to fight in that hopeless war. The book tells the tale of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, who were there at the begining of the conflict and present at it's end", the book is puplished by Faber & Faber and costs £20.00 or by telephone £18.00 free P & P 0845 606 4213.
    Regards,
    Joe.

I mentioned this book on the comrades site in early November. It is a cracking book but it can be bought for £13-00p hardback with a dust jacket in Tescos.

Re: Fusiliers:Eight Years With The Redcoats In America

    Hello Sox,
The book has been well researched and mentions quite a lot of previously unknown info. It lists Company commanders etc and even some views from Sjt Lamb of the 9th who elected to join the RWF and kept his rank. One aspect I did learn about was that the old chestnut about only one Cornet and a couple of Fusiliers coming out of Bunkers hill alive. It appears that we did not have all that many men at this battle. I am now reading about the battle of Camden where we covered our selves with glory.I have yet to reach the finale that is to say our surrender at Yorktown but even then we achieved more than all other regiments who walked out of Yorktown under terrible conditions imposed by the victors (the Americans and French). It is also most interesting when dealing with the buying of commissions in the RWF and how some officers were promoted from London due to their brave exploits. It also mentions the time the RWF were serving as marines. I can reccomend this book to all former RWF men of all ranks. In passing I can also, reccomend two more good books Sjt Lamb of the Ninth and Proceed Sjt Lamb.
Regards to all and have a Merry Xmas & New year

I have managed to read the book and agree with the comments about its content.

Another war that the politicians lost not the army.

    Enjoy

Re: Fusiliers:Eight Years With The Redcoats In America

I read this only recently, made me a bit angry, the tactics used by the rebels and the lack of political will that undermined the troops efforts. So I cannot say I enjoyed it, but it did educate me.

    Hello all,
I have bought all the above mentioned books, they are excellent. Re Mark Urban he like many another author can access info on the War of Independence from American sources and a lot of info can be gained from the records of the R W F.I am going to a book sale at the end of this month and hope to pick up a few more books.
    Regards R B D
