    AE Hammond

    hi
newbie here. first time on here today. i was hoping to get some info about my great granddad who served in the RWF. B company 1ST battalion. the only info i have is that he was promoted from colour sergeant to RSM on the 21 oct 1884. my uncle had a travelling writing desk that was presented to him on his promotion by the battalion. about 25 yrs ago my dad gave his (A E Hammond) stick to the museum . any info on his military record would be great. there was a rumour that he may have served in India.
    thanks
    Owen

    A warm welcome Owen.

Found this. Arthur E Hammond. He's entitled to a campaign medal for participation the 3rd Burma War. 1885-1887 (see above)

Looking through Regimental Records Vol 2. Your G/Grandfather has two mentions:

Firstly on the 1st July 1887. The Commanding Officer of the 1st Bn in India Col J Tilley was replaced after 6 yrs in command. He issued a written farewell order, during which he mentions that the Adj, Capt Dunn, the Acting Adj Lt Cole, Quartermaster Grey and Sergeant-Major Hammond "Never failed in rendering him the most willing assistance." At this point they are based at Lucknow. Effectively the men mentioned are the Colonel's regimental staff. On the same page it mentions the two captured Pagoda Bells from The Incomparable Pagoda of Mandalay, where the regiment had recently returned from. One of these can now be seen near to the Wrexham War Memorial in Wrexham, near to the swimming baths.

Later in 1890 he is mentioned in the team that won the Commander-In-Chiefs India Musketry Cup for that year.

Footnote: Statistics.Of the 17 Officers and 730 men who deployed on operations from Calcutta in 1885 on the Burma Campaign, only 6 officers and barely 300 other ranks marched back into Lucknow on the 7th April 1887. Of the missing:

4 had been killed by enemy action
300 had been invalided to India,
    14 invalided to the UK.
    87 died of disease!

Do you have a picture of him that you could share?
