Researching Hargreaves and Maylott
I'm looking for any help fleshing out the lives of my Great Great Grand father Samuel Hargreaves and his father in law Charles Maylott.
Charles Maylott is listed in the 1881 census as being born in Worcester in about 1851. He has a wife Ann (c1851)and a daughter 'Ada' or Adalaide (1871), and a son James (1879). Ada and Ann were born in Bath, Somerset and James was born in Ireland. They are living in the 'Citadel' Plymouth, St Andrew, Devon. Charles is listed as Private 2/23 R W F (S).
In 1889 Ada married Samuel in Wrexham and they lived in the baracks there. They went on to have 13 children Charles (1890), Alice, George, Elizabeth, Dora, Samuel, Arthur, ruby, Albert, Annie, Florence, Eva, Hilda.
In the 1901 Census I found them living in the Crown Hill Barracks, Plympton. They lived there for two or three years.
I would be greatful for any information anyone might have, I know specifics are unlikely, but I'm interested in what there lives might have been like, what campaigns or battles they might have realistically been involved with.
I know Wrexham was a major baracks, and also a location for recruitment. I don't know why the Welsh Fusiliers were in Plymouth or Ireland. Familiy stories also mention India.
I have tried the National Archives site and the Wargraves site, but I can't find any listings for Charles Maylott or Samuel Hargreaves.
Any help much appreaciated.

Re: Researching Hargreaves and Maylott
Andrew,
I am sure ap will have a much deeper knowledge of their movements but this might help you.
There is an age gap between their first born and the second which suggests
he may have been abroad for a few years.
2RWF left for the Gold Coast on 21/11/1873 where they fought in the ASHANTI expedition. I know that they were back at Plymouth by 1880.
I will dig out my notes and see if anything else I have may be of help.
The Irish posting I think was to the CURRAGH camp.
The postings I have are.1867/8 New port Brecon and Cardiff,1869 Aldershot 1870 Chatham
1871 Woolwich 1872 Ireland(several locations, 1873 Curragh 1874 Coomassie returning March then to Gibraltar same year 1875/9 Gibraltar 1880 Plymouth.Hope this helps.
Mike
P.S. If you do think he was at Coomassie you MUST read Regimental Records of The Royal Welch Fusiliers Vol 2. Compiled by Carey and McCance . It is in paperback at about £22. IBSN 0 9525408 2 7

Re: Researching Hargreaves and Maylott
Thanks Mike,
Thats really great to get some facts and ideas about what was happening. I've also just found out that Dora Hargreaves was born in India.
All the best,
Andrew

Andrew,
What is Samuels occupation in the 1901 Census

Re: Researching Hargreaves and Maylott
hi Al,
He isnt on the 1901 census - it's just his wife and family in Plympton. He is listed as a Private in the RWF on my Great grandmother's marriage certificate in 1913, at which point he is listed as deceased.

Not being on the census I would have thought he was overseas ?
However I can't find Samuel on the roll for the Queens South Africa Medal (1899-1902) with 1/RWF nor the China 1900 with 2/RWF

If I'm understanding this correctly, its quite possible that he was dead in 1901, which would explain why he wasn't mentioned. What year was the last child born? at least we can then bracket a period of his service, which would allow Richard Ward to look more closely.
David Langley has kindly checked his extensive Database for the men, no luck i'm afraid. Is there any other info that you may not have provided, small pieces can provide usefull pointers.

Re: Researching Hargreaves and Maylott
Thanks Andrew,
That makes it slightly clearer.
1890 - 1893 Based at Wrexham. 4 children born
1893 - 1896 1 Child born in India
1896 Possibly based back at Wrexham. 1 child born
1900 Child born at Plympton
1901 Family based at Plympton. No mention of Samuel(census)
1902 Child born at Plympton
1903 - 1912 A further 4 children born in Wrexham, although he feasibly could have been serving elsewhere. There is a 5 year gap 1907-1912, when there are no births, which would indicate foreign service, or his wife was having a much needed rest!!
1913 He is shown as deceased. On his daughters Marriage Cert.
Is there any other info on the Birth Certs, for example, on Hildas is the fathers Occupation still given as RWF.
Im not sure if you have Samuels Death Certificate. If not the details are listed below:
Deaths June Qtr 1913
Surname Given Name Age District Volume Page
HARGREAVES Samuel 48 Wrexham 11b 382

Re: Researching Hargreaves and Maylott
Samuel is quite interesting as his service doesn't fit neatly with the norm, I wonder if he had some special skill that meant he was required to remain behind, as an example, when the 1st Bn deployed to South Africa.
He is clearly depot based between 1890-93 (the 2nd Bn are in Ireland, the 1st Bn are in India. The 1891 Census shows, he is serving at the Wrexham Depot, aged 28 with his young wife Ada aged 20.
Between 1893-1896 the family have spent time in India, daughter Dora was born there. He would have been serving with the 1st Bn, who remained in India until Nov 1897. However his family are already back at Wrexham in 1896 when son Samuel Alfred was born.
The birth of children in 1900 and 1902 at Plympton still indicates he is serving in the UK, although the 1st Bn was in South Africa between 23rd October 1899 - January 1903, and has Richard as already mentioned, he does not appear on the medal roll, so we have to assume he never deployed.
During the period 1907-1912. The 1st Bn was based in Ireland they returned to mainland Britain on 21st Nov 1912, with some companies based at Portland and others at Dorchester.
You are fortunate in some ways that you have specific dates, that help identify his location
One area of research available is at the National Archives at Kew, they hold the Muster Rolls for each district, unit etc. For the period 1878 -1898. He will certainly appear on them. They also hold discharge papers up till 1913.
