    Advice/Assistance please

    Hello All

I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction and tell me what info I may be able to learn (if any) of my GG Grandfather who served in the RWF from 1897.

He was Owen Thomas Morris, Private 5365 (born I believe in early 1873) I have found a copy of his attestation papers showing he was attested on 12 Oct 1897 at Abergele. He was shown as being in the 2nd and what looks like v/13 Royal Welsh Fusiliers. I have also found a medal card showing Victory Medal J/2/102 B Page 142, British (same ref) and 14 Star J/2/2 Page 100. Date of entry therin 22/9/14

He died in 1947 long before I was born and I would like to find out more about him, where he served etc. My G Grandmother was born on a boat to Cork, Ireland in 1908 and her birth was registered there as well as with the army/overseas and so believe he was serving over in Ireland at that time.

Am I likely to be able to find out more about him than the above or are records likely to have been destroyed, if they may be available can anyone please tell me the best place to go to be able to find out more.

    Many Thanks
    Mark

    Re: Advice/Assistance please

You're in luck, Mark. I found thirteen pages of the service and pension records of OT Morris 5365 in the Kew archives. PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you the zipped collection. Any problems with the interpretation I'll be happy to help you solve.

What you read as v/13 is in fact VB. Apparently OT served with the 2nd Volunteer Bn RWF (later 5 RWF TF, I think). The J/ numbers you mention are the numbers of the lists of medal recipients. Lists beginning with J/ indicate the Infantry Records Office at Shrewsbury, which looked after the Welsh and border regiments.
