First Timer Searching WW II details on Hubert George 'Chico' Oliver
Hello Everyone,
I've just joined this site primarily to find out a little more about my uncle Hubert George 'Chico' Oliver born Chittagong Assam, India 14 December 1909 who I think served in this Regiment and to find out more about his service history during WW II. He died aged 50, 19 December 1959 in Hyderabad India after he returned from the war.
His Certificate of Service Book says “Regular Army” on the front, and his “Soldiers Pay Book” Army No. 3974504. The Welch Regiment, R.E.M.E (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers?). He spent 3 1/2 years as a Japanese POW (not sure where in SEA?).
He was Discharged on 27.5.48. From what I can gather he enlisted 29.4.40, not sure whether that might have been when he went to war. Also according to his army book under “Medals, clasps, decorations, mentions in despatches: any special act of gallantry or distinguished conduct brought to notice in Brigadeor Superior Orders” – 1939/45 STAR, PACIFIC STAR, THE WAR MEDAL 1938/45. I guess these were standard issue to all soldiers.
I would love to know if there is any record of the movements of his regiment and any other history.
Any help appreciated

Hello Kerry
Do you have family lore or does the Service Book state that he served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers which is a different Regiment to the Welsh Regiment?
His army number is within the number block allocated to the Welsh Regiment which was 39471001 to 4025000 whilst that of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers was 4178001 to 4256000
