henry herbert - raised the Regt?

Well, here I go again plundering the shared knowledge of fellow Forum members.

My Regt histories are still in the UK and my memory fails me; along with other things, disturbingly!

I recall the Regt being raised by Henry, 4th Lord Herbert of Cherbury/Chirbury (on 16 March 1689, of course, for William III's war against the deposed James II/VII)....so may I ask if me memory is correct and whether he was also 1st Earl of Powis or was that his successor, another Henry Herbert, in around 1702?

The 1st Earl of Powis was William Herbert (1620-1696), a cousin of the Chirbury family. if I read Wikipedia right.

Ahhhhh, Wiki. Was on there for a while over this and also went to other online historical sources. Rather complicated with the 'suspension' of titles and then reinstatement etc. One source gave me what you found and another said the Earldom was founded in 1702 and yet another said the Earldom was later in 1700s whereas the title of Baron of Powis was in the 1600s....etc. I am but a simple soul and easily confused.

Hopefully, I am on safe ground with our 'founder' as Henry, 4th Lord Herbert of Chirbury/Cherbury and may have to leave the rest hanging!

Well, I had some reservations myself, so I checked RRRWF vol 1 last night. The only mention of Powis in Henry Herbert's biography concerns the castle of Powis, where they keep his portrait. No mention at all of the title. Wiki might just be right here....,

I think so. Depending on where you read in Wiki and other refs, the Earldom predates him or post dates him (probably in a resurrection of a 'dormant' title).
