I would like to recommend this book by James Holland.
my god the people of Malta had grit...
up to 10,000 tons of HE a month fell on the Island for three years...

as the wife and i spend a lot of time in Malta i found this a very informative,interesting and enjoyable book. It certainly increases my respect for the Maltese people and gives a very graphic account of the suffering of all those on the island at the time.
highly recomended
