Help need with missing service history,wrexham/korea??
Hi,
Hope i have posted this in the correct section, trying to find some service history on the following relative.
The information i have is very limited, not even sure if he was in the RWF,but what i was told he was in wrexham/korea in the 1950's and fusiliers was mentioned and he originates from north wales, this is the only info i have.
This was stamped on a round tag 22655466.
Evan Evans.
From Brynrefail,North Wales.
I know its a long shot but any information would be appreciated.
Thankyou.

Re: Help need with missing service history,wrexham/korea??
In the early 1950s. the 1st Bn was in the West Indies, as far as I know. The 2nd Bn departed for Korea in July 1954 but while in transit was diverted to Malaya. That is all I can contribute. Others may know more.

That is correct. 1 RWF in Jamaca and 2nd Bn in Malaya. I was in Singapore with my Dad, whn the 2 RWF arrived and marched through Nee Soon to the Transit Camp before going to Port Dickson. Dad, Mum and I visited 2 RWF ion Port Dickson on way back from a holiday in Penang, and I appreciate that this is irelevant to this thread, but iot may brinmg back some memories to persons, like it has for me. There are people in the forum who were ex 2nd Bn and maybe they will be able to help with the original thread.

Re: Help need with missing service history,wrexham/korea??
All service papers for soldiers who served after 1920 are held at the Army Personnel Centre, Historic Disclosures, Mailpoint 400, Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow G2 8EX. A fee is charged (about £25) for each search, even if no material is discovered. A special form has to be completed prior to the search. It is essential that you quote the Regiment and personal number of the soldier concerned. There is a long backlog of enquiries at present so it may take some weeks to receive a reply. To download an application (SAR) form - visit www.veterans-uk.info click on 'service Records'. For the actual application you need the signature of a close family member. See the website.

Re: Help need with missing service history,wrexham/korea??
Its possible that he joined as RWF....hence "Wrexham" completed his training at Hightown Bks and was then drafted to other regiments. These guys went to Korea and wore other regiments cap badges.
Have a look at a previous thread below:

Hello,
The 2nd Battalion were originally posted to Korea. The advance party had left the UK, for Korea. At this time the 2nd RWF had a strength of 1200 men. We had a Major Adjutant Major Eggleton. Due to the Korean cease fire being signed when we were swanning around offshore Korea. And as a consequence of the peace treaty being signed this precluded fresh troops and ordinance being landed. We were then Diverted to Malaya on A.T.O.M. Duties (Anti Terrorist operations Malaya.)As regards the man you are seeking (Evan Evans) we had about 300 Jones's on our strength, I suppose the Evans's were not far behind.

Re: Help need with missing service history,wrexham/korea??
Hello derekh,
I am certain the relative you are looking for served in the 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers and in all probability was one of some 80 RWF men posted to the RF to make up the battalions strength. More RWF N/S men were also posted to the Kings Liverpool Regiment about the same time. The reason I an sure is that you mentioned he had been awarded both the Korea medal and the UN medal. This means he was most unlikely to have been in the RWF. The date of his award precludes the timing of the second RWF by some time plus the fact he must have served for at least some 90 days to qualify for these gongs. I reckon he was certainly 1 Royal Fusiliers. The 1st 2nd and 4th battalion RWF were presented with new colours on the 23 July at Wroughton airfield near Swindon.
they left for Korea soon after that

Re: Help need with missing service history,wrexham/korea??
Hello derekh,
I was called to dinner half way through my last e mail. I trained two of the RWF men who were posted to the Royal Fusiliers. I met up with them in Cardiff on an Armed Forces day, they were twins and they told me they were well looked after by the RF, In view of the dates you put in the e mail, I am certain the man you are seeking info on was in the RF. I ruled out him being in the RWF because very few if any of the RWF had the Korean Medal but I did see some of the 2nd RWF wearing the Butchers Apron the UN medal. I doubt if any were actually in Korea I think they were in Japan but some more knowledgeable members of the forum can correct me if I am wrong. I was told by the men who were in the R F that their first baptism of action was when they were sent into the Battle of the Hook. I suggest you write to the RF museum. Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (London) Museum. H.M Tower of London EC 3N 4 A B Phone 0203 1660910, e mail address is e mail info @fusiliersmuseum.org The Curators name is Major C.P. Bowes-Crick. If writing please enclose a Stamped Addressed envelope and supply as much information on the man you seek such as his number and dates of awards etcetera. And tell them you think he was posted to the R. F.s from Wrexham (RWF) and explain his relationship to you as they well be wary of sending info out to non relations. This may well get you a lot of news cheaper than a search will be.
Regards RBD
