Looking for more info on Major O.E. Hughes 6RWF WWII
I'm in California.
Client of my company has a piece of luggage with some interesting markings on it.
From my own research and with the help of the Militaria Forum on Arrse.co.uk. I discovered it belonged to Major O.E.Hughes of A Company 6RWF.
Re: Looking for more info on Major O.E. Hughes 6RWF WWII
Hi Simon,
Welcome. Just to get the thread moving, Maj Hughes was OC A Company 6 RWF. He landed at Normandy with his battalion in June 1944. It appears he was killed by shellfire on the 27th Feb whilst carrying out a recce on a bridgehead held by the East Yorkshire Regiment, whom the battalion was due to relieve. The enemy launched a surprise counter attack and he and some other senior commanders from 6 RWF were caught in the open. The location was near to a stream called Muhlen Fleuth close to Weeze.
Are you looking to reunite the case with the family or just general research. Its an interesting item. He was possibly born in Machynlleth Mid Wales in late 1912.

Thanks for the info AP1.
Suitcase is not in my possession, belongs to a client who has a collection of old luggage. So just general research. I'm pretty amazed at what I have so far found out about this piece in just one weekend.
Sad to hear the original owner died in action.
