Wondering if anyone can help or point me in the right direction.
Been researching our family tree and am told that my grandfather was in the Army - little else except someone once said he was a hero, he was not that at home...
I have very little info and don't know where to start - any pointers would be great even better any information would be fab.
Douglas Haig Bramley
Date of birth - 19/05/1919
Rank or profession (from marriage cert) Fusilier - 4858762 - Royal Welch Fusiliers.
That's all I have xxx
Thanks xx

Re: Help Required x
Hi Claire, welcome.
Firstly, there is no mention of him on the RWF Decorations and Awards list for WW2. That being said, its possible he may not have served only with the Royal Welch, he may have spent time with other units after he married. Which is your one fixed point. You have his service number and regiment, so I think you should be able to apply for his service records from The MOD's Historical Disclosures dept. Incidentally, what date and where was the marriage? it may help with pointers towards which RWF battalion he served with. Im not able to check books etc at the moment, hopefully someone else will chip in and assist. Could be interesting, this one. Keeps us posted please.

He has great christian names!!
Obviously the General was well thought of in your family. Maybe the hero bit was one generation above?

Hi AP1,
Ha me thinks it may not be so interesting he was known to like a drink and the hero tales may be tall ones!! Mum says her mam used to call him a coward...?? he used to show them his shrapnel wounds and mum says he was a 'desert rat' that's all she knows. I am interested in finding out more about another side of him...
They were married on 7th June 1944 he was 25 in Sunderland. From the census information his family were from Sunderland quite a way back.
I will apply for his service record as you advise and let you know how I get on...

Hywyn,
Just seen your post - yes great christian names - family both sides have fantastic ones!! lol - on your other point I would not say he was well thought of quite the opposite in fact...
Never thought about the hero bit coming from the prev generation... will try to get in touch with oldest uncle to pick his brains..

Claire.
Hmmmmm.
I just tried a post on this thread but it ended up on your other one for some reason. But then no-one ever trained me in how to manage a screen full of "windows" and I probably got confused on account of me age!!
I'll try again here:-
