Edward Thomas Chapman VC Memorial Project
The Pontlottyn Communities First Partnership is undertaking to celebrate the life and achievements of Corporal Edward Chapman VC, BEM who sadly passed away in 2002.
A Pontlottyn boy, there has been no dedication to him at his home town and money has now been granted from The Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver this project into the community by way of the opening of a memorial garden in the village. This is planned to take place on Monday 15 November 2010 between 1100-1200 with participants arriving by 1015 hrs (guests will gather from 1030 hrs).
Corporal Chapman (4080657) served in the 3rd Battalion The Monmouthshire Regiment and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 2nd April 1945 during an assault on the ridge at Teutoberger Wald having crossed the Dortmund-Ems Canal.
The CO 3 R WELSH has kindly agreed to take the salute on the day and to the provision of Sgt Joseph and the 3rd Battalion Regimental Mascot.
Mr Harry Knight has agreed to carry The Regimental Standard. However, should any other Standard Bearers and veterans wish to attend they will be more than welcome.
The day will follow a simple format with a local band performing and a short march from the Community Centre to the Memorial Garden, a distance of only about 500 yards. Local children will join the march as we believe that it should be a community event and Lieutenant Colonel E M Brain, Commanding Officer 3rd Battalion The Royal Welsh will take the salute.
All will then proceed into the garden where the citation in respect of Corporal Chapman will be read by Major (Retired) M Hooley (Mike) followed by a short Service of Dedication carried out by local clergy. Children from the local Primary School will plant some bulbs which will flower in the shape of the Victoria Cross; refreshments will later be provided.
