The Life and Campaigns of General Hughie Stockwell
This book written by Gen Jon Riley is an excellent read.(Thats my "O" confidential for another year).
Seriously, I've just read it on holiday. It appeals on a couple of levels. Those of us with an interest in all things Royal Welch, will enjoy reading about the actions in WW2, especially the Madagascar Landings undertaken by the 2nd Bn, and also his command of an infantry brigade in Burma. There is also the bigger picture for those interested, especially in relation to his post war commands, including the Suez landings, where his brilliant planning and leadership was marred by political ditherings back home, resulting in the resignation of the Prime Minister.
Jr notes that Stockwell went from Major to Major General in 4 short years. He learnt his trade at the sharp end, his first combat experience not happening until Norway in 1940, he had been serving since 1923 at this point in his life!! He ended his service as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, not bad going for a Royal Welchman who failed to make the cut for staff college.
Give it a go.
