RWF War Graves - Swansea

Hi i came across these two war graves in my local cem in port tennant Swansea.They are both from the second world war and are both fusiliers from the Royal Welch Fusiliers . They are Fus 419610 D ,JONES 25th APRIL 1940 AGE 18, and Fus 4186708 E WILLIAMS 5th APRIL 1941.would be nice to know more about them and there service. Ive taken some photos and ill post them if that would be of any help and to have them saved on the forum ......................

Hi Rob,

Neither guy appears on the WW2 Roll of Honour, so its likely they will be non conflict related...However!! Its of course possible that they were missed...but the dates fall outside any main RWF actions. I think the Dunkirk fighting commenced in May 1940, then there was Norway during the same period followed by Madagascar in 1942. Worth a little more digging though.

A starter for ten Rob. Williams was a Regular soldier who enlisted in August 1925. He left the battalion (would have been 1/RWF) on the 22nd May 1940. I would strongly suggest that he was wounded - as the date was towards the end of 1/RWF retreat and rearguard to Dunkirk.

The local paper may have more information.

I'll need to double check Jones as his number is too short. Off to bath the boys - so will have a dig for you later.

Yoour correct Richard, it should read 4196102 Jones, Daniel. He is listed on the ROH. It seems an early date. I don't have Red Dragon to hand, but it if was an early isolated incident it might be mentioned?

From the number he would be an early September 1939 enlistment. He was also a Regular. He is noted as 'Died' - So only seven months service, maybe a training accident or illness ?

Again the local rag would be a good port of call.

I think the first Dunkirk action was on the 14th May or thereabouts. It still worth someone having a look through Red Dragon. I have a feeling there may be reference to an isolated incident prior to the the above date where men were killed. One that springs to mind is the death of the CO 1RWF in an aircrash whilst carrying out an air recce of the defensive positions.

CWGC are recording Jones as 9/RWF. Son of Frank and Margaret Jones, of Port Tennant, Swansea.

Again we need to have a look at Red Dragon, soory I can't assist Rob, as im still away. I'm not really sure what 9RWF was, possibly a re-roled anti-tank or AA unit.
